AgriCulture

April 29 – June 10 2011, Start and end dates

In Hungary from the beginning of the sixties to the end of the seventies agriculture appeared in public mind not only as a pillar of economy but also as an integral part of culture. Feature films presented the historical problems of Hungary through the fates of rural people, writers analyzed in sociographs the everyday lives of people dealing with farming and stock raising or the changes in the situation of farmers’ co-operatives. In the professional art press of the seventies the question of representing reality by the Hódmezővásárhely School, among others, was a recurring topic of discussion; agriculture became a common subject of photographs, in the cultural journals arguments appeared about the inventors working in the field of agriculture, works of applied art showing peasants became an integral part of urban interior design.

By now the topic of agriculture has disappeared not only from culture but also from the public mind. The project titled AgriCulture would like to spotlight agriculture again viewing it from historical and contemporary artistic perspectives. On the one hand, it attempts to explore the system of connections between agriculture and culture, country and cultural policy in the context of the sixties and seventies while it provides an overview of the relevant works of art of the era – especially the period between 1962 and 1975 – in different genres (film, literature, arts, commercial, caricature, photography, applied art, etc.). The second layer of the project is given by the contemporary artists’ works and  their reflections on the era. The exhibition does not separate these two layers but presents them in interaction: the works of the contemporary artists are based on the works of art and documents from the archives.
