Zdeněk Sýkora. System and Force of the Line

The ‘line drawings’ displayed in the exhibition were created from 1973 onwards and received international acclaim within a short period of time. Despite being based on random computer-generated number sequences, Sýkora’s constructivist paintings are completely permeated by the artist’s control, which is why they cannot be exclusively reduced to the term “computer art”. The Emil Schumacher Museum Hagen shows Sýkora’s concrete paintings in reference to Emil Schumacher’s gesturally expressive art. Both artists used the principle of chance and unconditional freedom. Formal opposites, they are surprisingly similar artistically.
